Bark, released in 1971, is one of the late-period albums by Jefferson Airplane, notable for many "firsts" with its major personnel change. It was the first without band founder Marty Balin and the first with violinist Papa John Creach. Drummer Spencer Dryden had also departed, being replaced by Joey Covington. This was the first all new Airplane LP in two years, the previous being Volunteers, released in 1969. It was also the first to be released under the Jefferson Airplane owned Grunt Records label.

Lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen has four songwriting credits on this album, indicative of his growing importance as a composer. At the time of the album's release, he and bassist Jack Casady had already recorded two albums for their spin-off blues group Hot Tuna.

The album was a success upon its release, reaching #11 on the charts and eventually went gold.

Recording for the album began in late 1970. The band at the time consisted of Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick, and Joey Covington. Planned tracks included live versions of "Mexico" and "Have You Seen the Saucers?", Balin's "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short" and "Emergency", and Joey Covington's "Bludgeon of a Bluecoat."[1][2] A tour of the US continued through the end of 1970 with Papa John Creach joining the band on the day of Janis Joplin's death. Balin did not play the October 5th date, but continued with the tour. He was growing increasingly frustrated with the band's drug use, and "playing that messed up cocained music."[2] Jefferson Airplane stopped touring at the end of 1970 as Grace Slick and Paul Kantner were about to have a child. China Kantner was born January, 1971 and no more tour dates were scheduled although Hot Tuna continued playing the Fillmore East and Fillmore West in early 1971, and recorded a live album in March, First Pull Up, Then Pull Down. Recording sessions continued on in 1971, but Balin finally left the band in April. The band later admitted that they didn't really know what direction to go in without Balin,[2] and new material was composed and the Balin tracks were thrown out. The recording sessions finally concluded at the beginning of July, featuring a five-member band and Papa John on a few tracks. One of the Balin tracks from this period, "Up or Down" was later released on Early Flight, along with the studio versions of "Mexico" and "Have You Seen the Saucers".

The original vinyl LP release featured an outer paper bag with the "JA" logo as though it were bought in a grocery store. The "JA" logo is an homage to the A&P supermarket chain. The bag was wrapped around the record, which was also inside paper. Inside the bag itself was a cardboard cover for storing the record that featured a fish with human false teeth wrapped in paper and tied with string. Also inside the bag was a cardboard lyrics sheet insert, colored as pink "butcher paper." The paper bag became the cover art for the CD releases, and the fish image appeared on the CD itself.

Jefferson Airplane: San Francisco

Dug Dug's: Durango, Dgo

Los Dug Dug's are a Mexican rock group which started off in the early sixties as a high school band called Xippos Rock, with members Armando Nava and Jorge de la Torre. In 1966 Xippos Rock began a road trip from Durango to Tijuana and half way through the trip, the name was changed to Los Dug Dug's, an abbreviation of the band's native city and state. Once the band had arrived at Tijuana they commenced there ascent of Mexican Rock, soon landing a regular gig at Mike's Bar, where they firmly established their reputation. At this time they also did some gigs across the border in the USA where they picked up the latest sounds to take back to Mexico with them. In this way they brought The Beatles' music to Mexico, being the first band to play their songs in Mexico. At the same time they became the first band in Mexico to sing their own songs, as well as the songs of other bands in English, thus breaking what had been a rule in Mexican rock up till then.

In 1960 a seven-member rock and roll band known as Xippos Rock was formed by several high school kids in the city of Durango in the state of Durango. The band wa formed by two friends from high school,ROBERTO MIRANDA AND MOISES MUNOZ,ROBERTO was the lead guitar and MOISES was the bass player. While studying in he university of their home town,DURANGO , in the center of the REPUBLIC of MEXICO,after a while they invited ARMANDO NAVA,they allways see him carrying a guitar in his bike so they talked to him to join the band.ARMANDO had a cousin JORGE LUJAN that was very close to him and ARMANDO teach him how to play the guitar ,then , he was invited to the play in the band, after a while SERGIO ORRANTE , the drumer, join the band,in a few months FRANCISCO ALCALDE join the band as a singer,at the very last moment JORGE DE LA TORRE join the band as a second singer ,they did not have electric guitars, neither drums, but play with acoustic guitars with pick ups home made pick ups and as drums they used a still chair, they even play at a local radio station with a chair and acoustic guitars and some events in local places and theatres , like Ricardo Castro Theatre (known as Cine Principal back then) and in several parties. The songs they used to play in those early years were covers from Mexican rock bands such as Los Teen Tops and Los Locos del Ritmo.

After several months of success in Tijuana, the band decided to move to Mexico City, where they started playing at La Pista de Hielo on Insurgentes Av. They started making themselves a name in the biggest city in the world, and even members of other bands would go to their shows and get some ideas for their own, as Alex Lora (from El Tri) has recalled[[1]]. The success in Mexico city was so big that even TV stations asked them to perform and record songs for their shows, specially kids-oriented shows (they recorded Chicotito si, a kids song).

In 1968, Los Dug Dug's moved to New York City, where they got a record deal and recorded several songs. Even Armando Nava recorded songs with studio musicians. They had problems with the musicians' union, and also they had money problems, so they decided to go back to Mexico City. Nevertheless, the experience they got in New York was so worth that it granted them a place as the second rock band in the Mexican scene, behind of Toncho Pilatos.

Armando Nava's father was a sales person and desire to take his family to TIJUANA BAJA CALIFORNIA, and as a seles man he used to travel a lot. So one day, after a year or so, ARMANDO desire to go back to DURANGO and try to get the band " XIPPOS ROCK " to take them to TIJUANA, MR NAVA had a truck and ARMANDO talked to his mother to let THE BAND travel with them back to TIJUANA. At that time MR NAVA was in tijuana ,The lineup consisted of: Jorge de la Torre (vocals), Jorge Lujan (vocals and guitar), Armando Nava (guitar), Roberto Miranda (leader and lead guitar), Sergio Orrante (drums) and Moises Munoz (bass). While in Mazatlan, the band changed its name to Los Dug Dugs, and some of them decided to continue their journey all the way up to Tijuana, while other members (Orrante, Munoz and Miranda) decided to go back to Durango and continue with their regular lives as high school students.

The remaining members continued the trip which, according to De La Torre, was going to last for 5 days (he even said that to his mother). They got a gig in a low-range bar in Tijuana, just in front of the well-known Mike's Bar. Until one day they got a chance at Mike's, where they became the main act not only in Tijuana, but in the whole Mexico-California border. The Dug Dugs were the first group to sing covers and original songs in English, creating what would be known as La Onda Chicana, movement that would include bands like Bandido, Three Souls in my Mind (currently known as El Tri), Peace and Love, El Ritual, among others.
