Al margen de lo que su título implica Happy Together no es una canción sobre un romance de una pareja enamorada, de acuerdo con uno de sus autores, Alan Gordon, es sobre un amor no correspondido. El amante desesperado plantea a la chica: 'imagina como el mundo podría ser muy agradable' lo que podría suceder 'si invierto un centavo, te llamo y me dices que me perteneces' aclarando que los teléfonos públicos en los Estados Unidos de aquella época costaban un centavo. Una de las últimas frases '¿Cómo está el clima?' es la clásica recurrencia de cuando por fin se da cuenta que no va a pasar de ser su amiga. Gordon rememora: 'Tenía hecha media canción, la letra casi terminada pero no encontraba el concepto melódico adecuado. Después de una noche fatal las palabras comenzaron a tomar forma encontrándose con la música. Al presentarla a Gary Klein en la disquera se supo de inmediato que quedaba al tiro para la imagen que buscaba darle a The Turtles. |

The Turtles: Los Angeles
The Turtles, que primero fueron the Crossfires from the Planet Mars y, previo al nombre final The Tyrtles como se acostumbraba en aquellos ayeres. Como The Byrds, The Turtles iniciaron su carrera interpretando a Bob Dylan y, tras la grabación de Happy Together, que parecía casi una parodia de sí misma, y ya había sido rechazada por innumerables artistas, encuentran un punto de inflexión bara la banda y su productor Chip Douglas al grado que Michael Nesmith se pirateó a Douglas para producir a The Monkees. |
